Dignity is everything
The Women's Lunch Place offers engaging, hands-on internship opportunities to students at graduate and undergraduate levels. If you are interested in applying for an internship, please contact Sophie Lehman, Volunteer Coordinator, at sophie@womenslunchplace.org.
Interns become an integral part of the WLP community and build rewarding relationships with guests, staff, and other interns and volunteers. They are encouraged to participate in many different areas of the organization; in one semester, an intern can help prepare meals for 150 guests, assist homeless women as they fill out housing applications, and organize special activities for the WLP community.
We work with each individual student to develop a placement that meets his or her interests. We also offer ongoing supervision to each student, and strive to support his/her personal and professional goals. We are able to accept interns during the academic year and over the summer.
In the past, interns have assisted with the following projects and activities
• Working in our kitchen, preparing and serving meals; training new kitchen volunteers
• Orienting and supervising new volunteers
• Meeting guests' daily needs in the shelter by helping to distribute clothing or toiletry items
• Developing communications materials
• Supervising activities, such as our weekly knitting group or our personal shopping program
• Assisting with special events, including our annual Mother's Day celebration and Spaghetti Dinner event
• Overseeing daily activities in our Resource Room and helping guests with job and/or housing searches
• Designing and introducing new programs to the shelter, such as a book club or creative writing class
• We are always open to new ideas and welcome creativity!
